addressing misconceptions

Performing Arts students:

I'm sorry that the PAT demo wasn't as hands-on as I anticipated. The PAT tool was suppose to be done by last week so I thought that it would certainly be functioning today. If the Mac version is working next class I will schedule another demo where you can analyze your videos.
Family and Consumer Science Students:

If you chose to do the alternative assignment and you brought your digital video to class today and turned in the paper saying you did like I asked - you can consider that assignment (Video Modeling Review assignment) completed in full. You should begin right away on the last projects related to the technology rich lesson plan because they will not turn out well if left to the last minute.

!!There were some rumors going around that this alternative assignment replaced the student project example for the technology rich lesson plan - this is NOT true. This assignment was an alternative for the Video Modeling Review assignment.

PLEASE take time to read through the remaining assignments in the syllabus - they are not due until the end of the class - but you cannot afford to wait until then to start on them.

Alternative to Video Modeling Review Assignment

You are welcome to look for videos online of teachers using technology to teach in your topic area. However, I'm not sure how many there are so here is the alternative for you:

Learn about the Performance Analysis Tool (PAT):
1) you will have to take a some digital video footage of yourself, a friend, or student performing a skill in your content area (feel free to contact me to talk about ideas)
2) you will bring the digital video with you to class on the week the Video Modeling Review is due
3) also come to class with some assessment criteria that you want to look for in the video (think of what events you would look for in trying to identify a quality performance)
4) In class we will introduce you to PAT and show you how to use this tool developed by CID to analyze the performance

You will need to bring the digital video to class. You can check out a digital video recorder from the TLSC, or the HBLL library in the commons.

If your video is in VHS format - you will need to go to the TLSC and get some help converting it from VHS to digital format.

Health Bytes student video example

I just found an example of a student video poject related to health education at the Apple website:

Public service announcement on health topics by youth called "Health Bytes"

It might help to give you ideas for your own lesson plans.

RSS Feeds

It is great to see some of you finding feeds of interest. You may want to consider signing up for additional feeds at first too. This will let you easily see the first week or two which feeds have the information that is most valuable to you. - perhaps consider signing up for feeds that others in your group have subscribed to.

Depression!

Many people in the U.S. and world are suffering from some type of depression. Sometimes they never recieve any health care. How does one classify what kind of depression one has? Are they really depressed? Are they having a bad day? New York doctors have come up with a screening survey that they hope will spread world wide and become a standard of practice in detecting depression.

As a teacher we are constantly around youth. Some youth might be experiencing depression. If there is a survey that would be available to detect depression we need to be aware of it. Because we can get our students help immediately so that they will continue learning and improving at school instead of feeling hopeless.

Be Positive!!!!!!!

We are what we think. We need to be positive in our thoughts. Self-esteem is up and down for students in the junior high and high school levels. They need to learn to look at life and say: Am I willing to kick butt or have my butt kicked? Hopefully they choose the first. As their teachers we need to be examples of positivity and confidence. We need to show how a bad situation can be looked at and taken apart to find a positive aspect. And if not we need to focus our attention to something that is positive in our lives. As teachers if we can help our students build their self-esteem then we have helped out students in life and we will see them do great things.

Low Fat Diets are causing vitamin deficency in our youth!

A new study found in Nebraska that adults are feeding their children low fat meals. Skim milk and low fat salad dressings are two examples of the adults diets are affecting the way children eat. Obesity is a huge problem in the United States and watching what one eats is a positive. But, children need to learn to be active and it is their time to absorb and intake proper nutritious meals. Sometimes this involves having whole milk and lots of nuts and regular salad dressing. With this they will gain the proper vitamin intake of Vitamin E and C.

Understanding our bodies is essential as health instructors. Knowing what are bodies need we will be able to be examples to our students and also be able to provide advice. It's okay for our students to intake a higher fat diet. They need it. We just need to help them become excited about moving around and not being in front of the video games for hours on end!

Child Obesity

For the most part as mankind has progressed the average life expectancy has gone up with each generation. That trend, however, is now in check do to the increasing prevalence of child obesity. Some authorities are now saying it is likely that todays generation of children may live as much as five years less than their parents. Deseases related to obesity like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, and cancer are all factors in this projection. One doctor stated in this article that we are in the quiet before the storm. Basically he is saying that because of the growing amount of obese children in this country we are soon to be faced with an epidemic of health care problems resulting from a mass number of the population suffering from the effects of a life time of being extremely over weight. The problem is so real and so bad that some people are worried a huge increases in government health care expenses while others are saying it is so bad that the government will save a ton in social security payouts because people are going to die so quickly. To me this just means that we as health educators need to get serious when it comes to our physical fitness units and treat it as important as other classroom health topics like mental health.
